Southsea common has been voted the best picnic area in the South in a recent competition and its proximity to the main shipping lanes in and out of Portsmouth harbour mean, that it is not unusual to see, from the Sandringham Hotel, the bizarre image of large ships passing majestically though appearing to be sailing on the common itself.
